Is XRP slowly disrupting Bitcoin’s status as digital gold?

XRP and Bitcoin are two of the most-watched digital coins in the entire crypto space, although they’ve been in circulation for years already. The reason why they’ve become so well established in the market is that they’ve been providing significant value to investors all the while. Bitcoin has gained the status of “digital gold”, with its first-mover advantage, fixed supply, and market valuation dominance, positioning it as the main store of value in the digital asset landscape. But as the market evolves, many are wondering whether other assets, notably XRP, could challenge Bitcoin’s long-standing dominance over time.

In recent months, these discussions have been at the center of the crypto market, driven by renewed interest in Ripple’s native token and more and more people search on the web how to buy XRP. In fact, some analysts even make a bold XRP price prediction, stating it could double in value throughout 2026, although, as always, there aren’t any guarantees. As for the scenario in which XRP replaces Bitcoin as digital gold, it’s essential to evaluate several factors to assess the likelihood, including the growth requirement.

Key differences between XRP and Bitcoin

Both XRP and Bitcoin are decentralized assets that rely on the blockchain to record transactions. The latter was the first, launched in 2009 as a digital asset for online payments that did not require a central banking system. XRP’s origin story is, however, very different. Ripple launched the token in 2012, and unlike Bitcoin’s goal of eliminating the need for financial institutions, Ripple aimed to work with them and make cross-border payments cheaper and faster. Of the two, XRP stands out as a more seamless payment method, with transactions generally processed in 3-5 seconds and costing under $0.01.

On the other hand, Bitcoin transactions take around 10 minutes, and the average fee is more than $0.80. Notably, however, hardly anybody uses Bitcoin as a payment method nowadays: instead, they appreciate it for its potential as an investment, with its low supply of 21 million BTC providing built-in scarcity that gives it value. Instead, XRP exists in the middle ground between payment method and investment.

How likely is XRP to become the new digital gold?

To determine the likelihood of XRP overtaking Bitcoin as digital gold, it’s essential to examine the market structure, the numbers, and the real-world utility of each asset. As of now, Bitcoin trades at $95,350 per token, giving it a market cap of about $1.90 trillion. On the other hand, XRP trades at $2.06, with a total market cap of $125,290 billion. If you do the math, Bitcoin’s market cap is more than fourteen times larger compared to XRP, so it’s quite obvious which one has the upper hand.  XRP could only replace Bitcoin as digital gold if it surpassed BTC’s market cap, assuming BTC’s valuation remained constant. More specifically, its market cap would need to reach at least $1.85 trillion. This would account for an increase of 1,359% from its existing value. However, if Bitcoin continues to grow, the price of XRP required to turn the tables would need to be even higher than that.

Beyond price valuation, it’s essential to also consider the structural aspects of the two assets. The digital gold narrative for Bitcoin stems from its scarcity and passive value storage. But XRP is different by nature, focusing more on utility as it facilitates settlement and liquidity across the global payment infrastructure. This distinction is important because utility-driven assets and digital gold don’t operate in the same way in the market: for investors, digital gold is more of a holding than a regular use.

The strength of XRP lies in its integration with financial systems, not in long-term idle storage. Hence, from this perspective, the likelihood of XRP becoming the new digital gold would necessitate a fundamental shift in the market’s perception of utility, value, and monetary role.

What are the factors that could result in XRP outperforming Bitcoin this year?

First, let’s talk about Bitcoin’s large market size, which is considered to be one of its major strengths. While that’s true, it also represents one of its constraints: meaningful upside would now require sustained, significant inflows, while a modest institutional allocation that barely registers for Bitcoin could move XRP. For example, a $500 million allocation could increase Bitcoin’s value by only 0.5%, but the same allocation could push XRP up to 10%, due to its smaller market cap. This is just capital math happening as portfolios rebalance, a significant advantage when considering the likelihood of XRP outperforming Bitcoin.

Secondly, XRP ETF inflows matter more than Bitcoin’s mature ecosystem.  Most institutions seeking exposure already have it, while new inflows stabilize prices rather than boosting them. The XRP ETF market is still developing, with each allocation having a more visible impact on both positioning and liquidity. Portfolio managers tend to allocate smaller assets earlier, as risk is capped, while investors can purchase a meaningful position without moving the market. As positions increase, the percentage effect on XRP can exceed that on Bitcoin, even though the capital is smaller.

Lastly, payment corridors are active, with more than 300 institutional partnerships for XRP, and regulatory clarity has significantly reduced friction. There isn’t the legal ambiguity that used to exist, which lets institutions hold and use XRP more easily. So, it’s clear that there’s alignment between XRP’s narrative and its activity, which gives it a feasible path to outperform Bitcoin.

Yet even if XRP has the potential to offer higher returns, institutions opt for Bitcoin when markets turn cautious, because it has demonstrated its value during uncertain times. Furthermore, Bitcoin continues to sit at the center of institutional crypto strategy, sometimes even listed alone or first when committees approve crypto exposure, which highlights its superiority to altcoins. Under stress, Bitcoin behaves differently from XRP, which may rise faster in robust conditions but also fall harder when market sentiment shifts.

    The bottom line

While there are some factors that could lead to XRP outperforming Bitcoin, that doesn’t mean it will become the new digital gold, because the two cryptocurrencies are fundamentally different and play distinct roles in the crypto space. However, one thing is true: even if XRP doesn’t become digital gold, it has a lucrative use case and could be a long-term market winner.
